5Solid, Versatile, Good Option on low budget.
By GYipster
Bought the White version online on eBay as amazon did not have it in stock at the time, so I'll be reviewing my experiences on the BLU Life Play from the past couple of days.

My first impressions is that the phone is pretty amazing, its solid to feel in the hand and feels lightweight. At only 7.9mm thin, its almost as thin as the Samsung Galaxy S4 while having the performance reminiscence of a top-notch 2012 smartphone.

So how does it perform in 2013... lets find out!

BUILD QUALITY
-------------

The build quality is amazing, and its feels very solid to hold in the hands. the back cover is made out of plastic but unlike such models like the S4, its has a more matte finish than a glossy, making it more durable to hold in the hands. Has 4GB of internal storage and only ~1GB is accessible but you can add an external micro SD card up to 32 GB (I have one and it works). Has a dual sim slots (1 mini and 1 micro) and its unlocked as well so you can use with any GSM service provider with the correct APN settings.

Performance
-----------
With a 1.2 Quad-Core processor, its pretty fast and also has 1 GB of RAM. The phone runs smooth but you'll feel the occasional lag when opening/switching apps very quickly. But all apps I have tested so far (Facebook, Youtube, Gmail, Maps) runs without any problems. For the geeks, my quadrant score was 4068, so still pretty good but far less than the top-notch.

Battery Life
------------
With a 1800 mAh battery that is removable, I was able to get though a full day somewhere between 60-70% left and that was with a single phone call, some web browsing, and texting. So my rating of the battery life on this phone is pretty good and it will last.

Software
--------
Comes with Android Jelly Bean 4.2.1, while not the very latest, you'll still get things like lockscreen widgets, google now, etc. Its a pretty stock version with some included apps and a settings menu that looks different. Feels pretty quick and easy to navigate as well.

Camera/GPS
------
Has a 8 mp rear and a 2 mp front. Haven't taken any official photos but with a few quick captures, my judgement is the quality is good and pictures were nice and clear. The flash is pretty bright so get very used to it.

The GPS also works pretty nicely and you will get a quick lock with the device with accurate location.

Call Quality
------------
Call Quality is good, my first call the user sounded very soft but after using voice mail on full volume, definitely wasn't a phone problem. Speakers work nice too and its loud but not too loud.

Conclusion
----------
Pros that I like about this phone is a) Price b) Build Quality is exceptional and c) Good battery life

Cons are its not the fastest and smoothest device but definitely not slow either, the vibration/volumes could be stronger and I'm still quirky about the support from the company BLU and any future updates this phone will get.

Overall, very happy with the device and it comes with a screen protector and case, USB cable, charger, cleaning cloth, pair of earbuds, and of course the phone itself. Definitely recommend buying this phone if your on a tight budget but want something current with the latest version of Android.

5Loving it!
By chirma
I'm not a phone whiz at all but I've been researching my next phone for quite a while now and the Life Play seemed to have everything I wanted at a great price (ok...I did really want the Life One but couldn't wait for it). Got it today, and voila! I'm up and running! Set up is easy, all very intuitive. Call quality is great. Main camera is awesome and front camera really darn good. Can't comment on the data speeds yet as I am using a t-mobile sim at the moment and limited to 2G because the phone isn't 1700/2100 (t-mobile's 3g/4g frequencies). My new sim card (for use on AT&T 1900 band) will be here in a day or two so we'll see but I have high hopes for high speed based on the amazing wi-fi speed. And did I mention that the phone is super light, amazing screen colors and a very lovely blue color. Again, I would have preferred the yellow but was too impatient so I opted for the blue and I really like it. Also appreciate the included cover and screen protector.

5Pretty good phone at a great price
By secretasianman
$230 is a pretty darn good price for this phone which includes a case and screen protector.

Pros:
- Bright and clear 1280x720 IPS LCD. Great viewing angles with sharp text.
- Good 8MP camera. I compared pictures taken with the Life Play and my Galaxy S 2 (IMO great camera picture quality) and found them to be comparable. The 1080 video recording look pretty good as well. No lag or stutter.
- The speaker and earpiece were loud enough for me. Phone call quality (this is a phone afterall right?) was good.
- Decent battery life. As with most modern smartphones you'll want to charge it halfway through the day.
- The MTK MT6589 chipset is powerful enough to play some 720P MKVs containing H.264 video and DTS audio played back through MXPlayer using software decoding. I'm not a big gamer on cell phones but I did load up Dead Space. Extremely smooth gameplay.
- MicroSD slot.
- Dual SIM: One is a micro-SIM and the other is a regular SIM slot. I only used one SIM.
- WiFi and Bluetooth radios worked without a hitch. Phone has support for HSDPA 850/1900 which is perfect for AT&T, AT&T MVNO customers, and some T-Mobile customers depending on location. Supposedly supports 42Mbps downloads and 21 Mbps uploads but I couldn't really verify that since I'm running on a AT&T MVNO.
- GPS locks quickly and stays locked. Good accuracy according to GPS Test app.
- Phone is VERY thin and light.
- Almost stock Android 4.2.1.

Cons:
- Only 4GB of storage of which 1.75GB is user accessible. Keeps prices down I suppose.
- USB and audio ports on top of phone. I prefer my USB ports on the bottom but this is probably just user preference. At least the USB port isn't on the side of the phone.
- No HDMI out support.
- The battery cover seems to pop off pretty easily. Removing the TPU case from the phone can easily pop the battery cover off. Not a big deal if you don't remove the TPU case often.
- Lack of accessories. Come on BLU. I want an extra battery.

Overall I'd recommend this phone for budget conscious users who don't want to pay a fortune for unlocked un-subsidized smartphones. I fall into that category and my primary needs for smartphones are: Big screen but not Galaxy Note sized, good GPS, good camera, and good PHONE performance. This phone fits those needs.

*** 7/7/2013 Update ***

+ Camera: Not so great in low light and the flash is useless. The flash actually causes a glare and drowns out my subject in the photo. On the bright side the camera has an HDR setting which works very well!
+ Wireless Display: Found a toggle for Wireless Display. It's obviously not an Intel WiDi device... maybe Miracast? Will test with a Netgear PTV3000.
+ Battery life: For a 4.7" screen device, this phone lasts longer than my Samsung Galaxy S 2 i777 and Galaxy Nexus. Maybe it's the combination of newer low power chipsets and an 1800mAh but it definitely lasts longer and actually charges while the screen and GPS chipset is in use in the car.
+ MicroSDHC slot: I couldn't get my SanDisk 64GB microsdxc to function properly. The phone recognized the exFAT formatted card as a damaged card and suggested a reformat. It did so but stopped recognizing the card after I copied somewhere over 1.5GB but less than 2GB back to the card. The card works fine in my Win8 tablet.

*** 7/31/2013 Update ***

Never able to test out the Wireless Display function as the Netgear PVT1000 I had access to only supports Intel WiDi. Oh well.

I did manage to get an AT&T GoPhone SIM and cut it down to microSIM size for use in the SIM 1 slot. Both SIMs are active but only one can use 3G (HSPA+). The OS allows you to choose which one uses 3G and you can also choose the default SIM for voice, data, text, and video calls. Pretty cool feature since I've never used a dual active SIM phone before.

For those looking for extra screen protectors and batteries: This phone is essentially a re-badged Gionee Elife E3. I purchased some screen protectors and a battery for that model and they work on the BLU Life Play. It's a shame BLU hasn't addressed our accessory needs yet.

Overall I'm very pleased with this phone and still amazed it only costs $230 unlocked. As component prices come down, I hope to see HDMI out and OTG support for next year's iteration.

4Pretty good phone
By Chia
I have had this phone for over a month now. I love it, but it isn't perfect. This is my first smart phone. I had a "biscuit" with a shitty camera so I bought this for mostly it's camera and internet abilities (Twitter, Instagram, looking up stuff). I will be a college student this fall and I wanted to take a lot of pictures of my new surrounding, friends, etc. The front camera is basically shit. I'm not pleased with the front camera at ALL. I think my Ipod's front camera is better than it, but the main camera is really amazing. I love it. I noticed that the camera button on the side barely works. sometimes it does, most times it doesn't work.

I initially thought it didn't have an outlet for the sockets used in the US, and I contacted the seller. The customer service was really helpful and patient. They were just wonderful. The charger is really huge (because you have to add an adapter on top of it). I would advice you to get a samsung charger. It does the job. This phone gets really hot sometimes when you charge it (i would say 30% of the time) and the battery life is not so awesome. I carry my phone charger everywhere I go. This is definitely a change from having a phone which I could go a maximum of 3-4 days without charging it WITH constant use. It has went berserk on me once. (I blame my Twitter app for that).

and just FYI, if you are in the USA you have to use this phone on At&t network or T-mobile network! I purchased the Straight Talk sim card plan (the one with AT&T Compatible Phone) and it works amazingly! You pay $45 monthly for UNLIMITED everything!!!! and I mean everything! So if you are a college student or just want to save, I advice you to get Straight Talk! GREAT service everywhere!!

Overall a GREAT phone, nothing is perfect. I immediately purchased a protective case and screen after I purchased the phone. Surfing the internet is really fast. and the screen is amazing. Videos are super clear and sharp. The white Magic really makes a difference. I did not have any problems with the see through stripe. I love the way it fits into my palm. The design is amazing and a lot of my friends are jealous. I love how it's unique and different (unlike how everybody has the Iphone here). The Android system is amazing and from what I read somewhere there, Sony will soon have an update to update this phone to the android Icecream sandwich, the same system the Samsung Galaxy series has.
Nearly everybody is asking where I got my phone from and such. A while back when I asked Straight Talk customer service if my phone would work with it (and when I told the lady from India that I had a sony Xperia P she was like "oooo that's a really good phone") :D

3Good phone, but ..
By Kate
The functionality of this phone is undoubtedly great. The screen is bright and clear, the sounds are very loud too. All the applications work fast, surfing the net has been fast and easy, especially on WiFi. Camera takes good-quality pictures, but make sure the light is good and don't expect professional pictures - it is a phone after all, not a camera.
All in all, I am quite concerned with the see-through stripe at the bottom of the phone. Some users have complained about an air bubble appearing there in 2 weeks or so after using the phone. So, there is one in my phone too, and I am not sure how it will affect the functionality of the buttons on it (return, home and menu buttons). Not much of a deal but a little disappointing.

5Style and Functionality at a reasonable price.
By Derek
My rating is based on the following characteristics: great audio quality, above average camera, and a good screen with acceptable brightness for outdoor viewing. I'm not a big fan of the plasticy textures of the Samsung line, so the aluminum chassis of the P felt good from the start. Feels solid, yet very light. It should last a couple of years without issue. For me, the 4" screen is just right, providing a window into what's relevant to me (Calendar, Gmail, Weather, music track info) with single-handed operation. Any sort of rationale I can conceive to have a larger phone is better served by my 7" tablet. I don't game on my phone much.

Sony's touch on the OS is light and appreciated. Frankly, the size, power, and cost of the current generation's superphones (HTC One, Galaxy S4, et al) is beyond me. All I want is a PHONE that can handle a couple of dozen of priority apps and that provides the above characteristics. Used in this manner, the battery lasts 3-4 days . A big difference on my previous phones (G1, G2), that could lose as much as 10% battery per hour! On the subject of apps, it did include several bloatware that were easily removed via the normal method, root was unnecessary.

The recent JB update with Google Now, and auto G+ backup really completes the package.

4KM-900 Black
By B. DeHamer
I have been using this phone for the past 3 weeks. I originally bought it locked to T-mobile UK paid for it to be unlocked, and De-branded the phone myself to get it to the generic version without the lame t-mobile junk all in it. That being said I really like this phone.

Pros:
-5 mega-pixel Camrea
-DVD quality video
-You tube application (unfortunately streaming is played over the DIVX player and not flash)
-Google maps
-8g of internal memory
- Expansion slot up to 32g micro
-Email (pop3 and Microsoft exchange)
- FM transmitter
- Fm radio
- High resolution screen
- Intuitive user interface
- Java
-WIFI
-Blue tooth with stereo support

Cons:
-No way to turn off popup events notice annoying ass hell
- The GPS takes forever to find my location, most of the time it cant
- Very small onscreen keys for texting make it a challenge
- Sometimes the phone gets confused about what position its in and wont rotate successfully when typing.
- no USA 3G

Supposedly according to the help section in the software suite this phone can be used as a blue tooth web cam.. I have no idea how to though.

Overall:

The call quality of this phone is good, there have been a lot of complaints about battery life but for me this hasn't been a problem. Seems to last the whole day just fine with moderate use. I had a G1 before this phone and its battery life was a lot worse. I used the fm transmitter in my car for the first time today it seemed to work okay considering it's a phone, downer is bass didn't seem to make it.

This phone is very sleek and sexy and functional I love how thin it is and how well the camera works. The wifi and bluetoth work very well. And the screen is very clear. Even with the GPS acting lame I love this phone and would 5-star it if I could turn off stupid events notifications!!!!

2Bittersweet experience
By Steven Burns
I had this phone for about three months, until it fell from about 3 feet and the screen broke.
That said, I'll write this review being objective, based on the whole experience as a user.

Pros:

- Capacitive Screen: Yes, just like the iPhone, no need to press, just touch. You can perform gestures such as sliding pictures or scaling them with two fingers.
- Nice interface: the rotating cube is great. The contact manager is as good as it gets, I loved it.
- Wonderful screen resolution: 480x800
- Good looking and not bulky at all, especially for that resolution.
- Great multimedia features: decent camera, video with sound, 8GB, nice music player.
- Good battery life when used as a music player: I had this phone playing music for hours in a party with no need for a charger.

Cons:

- Average battery life with day to day use.
- Slow: Browsing is embarrassingly slow. I thought that was normal for a cell phone until I saw some other phones browsing way faster, even phones worth half the price. Navigation is fast 90% of the time but occasionally it'll freeze for a few seconds. Same thing with the accelerometer, sometimes it just doesn't realize it has to rotate the screen.
- Interface mistakes: regardless of the great looks, it has some obvious mistakes. For example, when you make a call it locks the screen, so far so good. But sometimes you need to unlock the phone (to dial an extension number for example) and guess what, as soon as you click the unlock button on the highly sensitive screen there's a red "hang up" button just below it waiting for you to click it by mistake.
Also, IMHO the "call" button on the phone should open the dial-pad and the one on the screen the "recent calls list", not the other way around.
- Kind of fragile: I've had Nokias fall harder with no problems whatsoever.

Well, that pretty much summarizes it, I hope you find my review useful.

4LG Arena KM900
By k1skanation
I've had this phone for over a month and I couldn't be happier. At first, there were freezes, reboots, and other faulty software problems. However, after updating the firmware, it's quite an outstanding phone.

Great signal strength (for me at least.)

GPS works very well after a 5 minute modification (Don't quite understand why they didn't make it work well in the first place, however I can't complain.)

Camera is nice, not the greatest but no phone's camera is.

Video recorder, however, is very VERY good. It records videos in 720x480 resolution (DVD resolution) @ 30fps.

The music player needs touch-ups, however it works. What I enjoy about it is the sound quality. It's almost astounding how great it sounds.

The major gripe I have is the DivX and XviD player. You're forced to convert your already-encoded DivX movies to the mobile standard (320x240 or less resolution, while the phone's resolution is 800x480). However, if you take the time to convert your movies to mp4 format, you can easily play DVD quality videos on the handset.

All in all, I enjoy the phone.

4Outstanding cost/benefit, despite some small issues.
By smatsum2
My feeling is that the BLU Studio 5.0s has an outstanding cost/benefit, especially because other unlocked smartphones here at amazon.com, with similar specs, would be priced around $300 or more. The quad core 1.2GHz CPU and 1GB memory makes the response time of this android device quite quick. The GPU is lacking a bit, but this won't be an issue for non-heavy gamers, because it can handle most of the current 3D applications quite well anyway. In overall, I'm really satisfied with my purchase.

I also experienced some of the issues the other reviewers were reporting. For instance, since I also use only 1 SIM (for a T-Mobile, prepaid service), it displays at the bottom of the locked screen a message indicating that only emergency calls are allowed (because SIM 2 is empty), and if we accidentally touch that message (when trying to unlock the screen) the phone will send you to the dialing screen, which is quite annoying.

The above issue is not a big deal if you change the screen unlock method to something other than "swipe", because it is not so easy to touch the "emergency call" by accident when your unlocking method is PIN, password, or some special "pattern".

Additionally, as also stated by another reviewer, the portion near the main camera gets quite hot, especially when I use it while plugged to power cord. I believe that region is where most of the core components of this phone are concentrated, so I'm concerned about overheating.

No surprise, when the phone (i.e. the place near the camera) got hot at a certain degree, the touch screen started to get very wild (actually, the touch sensor, not the display itself). In my case, when I touch somewhere in the screen (and keep it touched, for example), the sensor suddenly started to detect multiple touches in nearly random places, so it started to press lots of links and accidentally deleted some of my icons (that's when I first realized the problem). In such situation, it gets practically impossible to use the on-screen keyboard, because it will start inserting lots of letters randomly.

Fortunately, this never happened when the portion near the camera was sufficiently cool.

From the spec I saw in other web sites, they mentioned the phone comes with A-GPS feature too, but I could not find a place to see if it was really enabled. I had to install an application called "A-GPS Switch" to see if A-GPS was enabled (wasn't enabled in my case), and to turn it on.

Some apps also detects presence of a magnetic field sensor, but not sure if this is a valid report, because I never tried using the sensor for something.

Since this is very thin, I found the back cover hard to open (I was afraid of braking the plastic and/or my nail), so I took a while to insert the SIM/battery/SD card. I'll use a small flat-head screwdriver (in order to insert it to the slit and gently twist it in order to remove the back cover) the next time.

In summary, the followings are the cons and pros I could identify so far:

Cons:
- heat (associated with the fact that touch sensors may get really wild);
- quite difficult to open (a problem perhaps caused because it is thin);
- BLU's manual/website/documentation were not very helpful.
- 4GB of internal storage, but considerable portion used by OS and default files/applications, so about 1.4GB is allocated for user files, and about 1.4GB is allocated for user application (so, you may need an SD card for your files and application, but not all applications can be installed in SD cards, unless you root your phone);
- Adobe Flash is not actually enabled (I needed that, because I used to develop flash assets myself - so wanted to test them in my new phone). I had to install it "manually", because it is not supported in Android 4.X anymore. However, HTML5 is supported, so most of new and elaborated web sites should work fine. Note: this is not a problem only on this phone, because it seems to be an issue on all Android 4.X phones.
- Adreno 203 GPU is not so good compared to other competitors (but it is reasonably good, because could play some 3D games normally),
- It's only around $20-$30 cheaper than BLU life play, which seems to show better performance (but the battery life of studio 5.0s seems to be better, and the design of studio 5.0s is nice, so not entirely sure).

Pros:
- Quad core processor is fast for ordinary usage;
- 1GB memory works very well, unless you try to run lots of applications in parallel.
- Thin, nice design.
- 5-touch large screen, which is also easy to see (you may find it difficult to find compatible cases, pouches or holsters, though).
- Great cost/performance (way better than competitors), so you can eventually use the money you saved in order to buy better accessories, like fast SD cards, or perhaps a holster to carry it, you choose.
- 8MP main camera works nice. The secondary camera also fills the need (e.g. video conference).
- Equipped with GPS, accelerometer, proximity, luminosity sensors (well, most of contemporary smart phones also do, though).
- Good battery life so far.

The cons looks larger in text, but I'm overall satisfied.

As in any android device, this one will only start "working" after you finish configuring everything and install your favorite applications. I strongly suggest you to also buy a class 10 (or faster, if there are) SD card (limited to 32GB maximum size, though) in order to guarantee enough space for large applications/files, while keeping the speed consistently fast, so data access won't become a major performance bottleneck.

And don't forget to install some antivirus, especially if you are going to enable your phone to install applications not "signed" by google play (e.g. adobe flash). ;-)

4Good Bang for your Buck

To preface, I moved from an unlocked Samsung Galaxy S (the first one) to the Blu Studio 5.0. I am running it on the T-mobile's $30/month plan (unlimited text/data 100 min talk). I've been using the Studio 5.0 for almost a month now.

Pro: Price, speed, OS

Cons: Randomly turns off, Dual SIM, Manuals, Headphone jack audio, Battery (All elaborated below)

You really can't beat the price. I went in looking for a functional smart phone that would be under $300, and this by far had the best specs. The smart phone is much faster than my previous setup, though it is slower than my friend who does have a Galaxy S4. Depending on the kind of coverage I have, it will take 3-10 seconds to return a google search result on my phone. The setup for Android 4.1 doesn't have any issues I have encounter thus far, and seems to work flawlessly. The primary camera takes good photos, as long as you are not zooming in, and the flash works fine. I am able to run every app I have tried to download so far without having any platform issues.

Primary issue I have had with this phone so far is that it has randomly restarted 6 times now while I have been trying to use it. The reboot time was about 7 or 8 seconds every times, but it is still annoying to have it shut off for a bit while being used as a GPS. I currently run the phone with only 1 SIM card. Because of this, the phone shows that I am missing a SIM card, so it always offers me 'emergency calls only' on the locked screen. I have hit this once so far. As far as I can tell, there is no way to have the phone disable the dual SIM card capabilities. This leads into the next issue. This phone currently does not have a full manual. It comes with a 15 page cheat sheet, but there is no full fledge manual currently available. I'm able to figure out how to do most things I have wanted to do, but when it comes to the more specific things, like knowing what all the symbols mean across the top of the screen, I don't have a clue what they mean. Finally, the speaker on the phone is nice and loud, but for some reason the audio through the headphone jack is much quieter. I can hear music fine when sitting in a quiet office, but it is next to impossible to hear audio through the included headphones if you are on a plane. Side-by-side, the speaker I hook up to my phone is almost twice as loud when hooked up via bluetooth rather than headphone jack.

The battery is able to survive a day with casual use, but it does drain fast and get hot if constantly used. On wifi, I am able to stream 6 hours of netfix before the battery dies. While at work, I am able to play back 8 hours of audio continuously and have about 1/4 battery left. I am also able to run 3 hours of google maps with turn by turn directions without having it die.

Overall, I really do like the phone. Though I did list a good amount of downsides, that are heavily outweighed by the general capabilities this phone does have. I am able to work around all the issues I have had thus far. Really, I didn't expect much functionality out of a $200 phone, but it has far exceeded my initial hopes.

In the box: phone, headphones, usb charger, usb to wall converter, small manual, a shoddy case that doesn't let you use the side buttons of the phone and 2 screen protectors (1 already on the phone).

5Best bang for the buck

I am a regular amazon customer. I purchased this phone through P-tel and am using it on the T-Mobile network. This phone is amazing for the price. It isn't a Galaxy S4, but it is most likely the best phone I have encountered priced under $250. I have read bad reviews about the screen. I am an Evo 3D owner and am used to a sharp screen. This one doesn't look bad at all. The battery takes forever to charge, but with normal use you won't have to worry about draining it during the day. One thing I dislike is the lack of case selection. There are none for this particular phone except the one it comes with, and that one makes it very hard to use the buttons on the sides of the phone. The camera is great as long as the lighting conditions are decent. This is my first quad core processor. I like ALOT. Fast and snappy. I recommend using this phone on P-tel because they have unlimited talk, text, and web for $40. You don't have to pay the extra for 4G because the phone is only 3G capable. This phone ships with vanilla android. Facebook isn't even pre-installed. For me that is a big plus. I don't want a bunch of bloatware. Sound through the included headphones is almost non-existent. I got the poweramp app for free, and a pair of skullcandy earbuds, and problem solved. This phone is rather complex, but once you play with it for a while you'll figure it all out. I definitely recommend this phone for anybody that wants the 5 inch screen of the Samsung Galaxy, but not at the cost of two car payments. The BLU studio 5.3s is basically the same phone as the 5.0s with a 5.3 inch screen. Overall great phone for the price.
